EMFANZ encourages the use of ‘OPENSOURCE’ operating systems and  software. Hence on this page you will find links to information on the open source operating system “LINUX” (which is not as frightening and geeky as you may think) and great cross platform software (runs on both the standard PC Operation system and on Linux) such as the FIREFOX internet browser, the THUNDERBIRD email client and the SUNBIRD calendar and organizer.

On this web site there are links to the home pages of these open source projects. You will also find links to THE GIMP free bitmap image editor, OPENOFFICE.ORG, a full office suite that will open, save and generate documents in all standard office formats, and the ‘OS for Human Beings’ UBUNTU LINUX. EMFANZ recommends this OS to small business operations and to Community service groups because of its security, robustness, the full software package that comes with it on the same disk and the fact that it is intuitive and easy to use. Finally there is a link to the home page of the amazing professional but free LINUX non linear video editing package CINELERRA. More interesting links to free and open source software can be found on our LINKS page.

ABOUT US

The Electronic Media Foundation was formed in 1995 as the ‘Education Foundation Aotearoa’. The Foundation changed its name to EMFANZ two years later in 1997. The founding members were a group of friends and associates - professionals in the fields of psychology, visual communications, education, internet development and video / film production. Their initiative was in response to the lack of modern, effective educational and support media in many key areas of community need, and the lack of a central resource facility for countless educational, training and support videos and other important information resources that are held separately by community groups, trusts, government and tertiary education departments, etcetera, nationally. A great deal of this material is held without the knowledge of many people and groups who are disadvantaged by a lack of access to it - a situation that adds to the burden on our social welfare system (It is a goal of The Foundation to build a central database and library for this valuable resource so that everyone may have access to it).

EMFANZ is a charitable non profit organization administered by a board of trustees.

HOW THE FOUNDATION WORKS

EMFANZ assists non profit and voluntary community service groups and other organizations performing public services with valuable educational media that they may not otherwise be able to arrange or afford.

EMFANZ also initiates its own projects where it sees a need in the community for information, education and or support.

With the proliferation of DVD quality video, the advent of HD Television and slick internet websites, the credibility of an organization is often judged by the quality of its internet presence or educational, training or promotional media. Regrettably as the technology and complexity of electronic media improves, the production costs expand. This puts many community groups at a disadvantage because they often cannot afford to produce training, educational, promotional and / or support media of commercial / professional quality. EMFANZ seeks to balance that disadvantage by helping to put innovative, professional quality educational / promotional media within reach of all community service groups who can use such media to achieve their goals and support their missions.

In particular EMFANZ specializes in video, DVD, A/V, multimedia and internet project development. For instance, the Foundation has produced community service websites like www.childsafenz.org , educational video programmes such as “Living with H.I.V.” (for the NZ AIDS Foundation) and “What Will Happen If I Tell?” an educational programme for the (non offending) parents / caregivers of sexually abused children which consists of an internet website, two video programmes and a CDROM.

EMFANZ can also assist groups with raising funding via grants and sponsorship for projects that they would otherwise be unable to afford.
